2nd. Floor beam ready to receive concrete

My workers have put in the steel reinforcement into the 2nd. Floor beam formwork and the beams are ready for concreting. I have booked the mobile crane and because tomorrow is a public holiday I have to pay an extra of RM150. I have decided to proceed with the concreting in order to keep progress according to schedule. With progress at 1 week per floor the RC structure will be completed by 1st. week of January 2009. After this I shall proceed with the floor construction consisting of timber joists and cement board. I will not be using RC suspended slab. The 2nd Floor, 3rd Floor and Roof joists will be red meranti timber and act as nesting planks, killing 2 birds with one stone. I will not be showing any floor plans in my blog. I will only show pictures of work in progress. To find out the details, just keep track of the progress.

TS, Congrats and best of luck for your 2nd standalone BH.

Eager to find out what will u use for the flooring on 1st and 2nd floor. Will u use normal timber, water proofed plywood or something else? I'm planning to order 2'x6' red meranti with groove for the flooring base at the same time to use them for the nesting plank to save cost like you do but still figuring out for the flooring material.

Thanks for putting and designing such a wonderful and informative blog.

Good luck and Happy new year 2009.

Zamri.

Zar7677,

I intend to use 2" x 4" red meranti timber with grooves and the timber laid out in 2' x 2' grid and topped with 12mm asbestos free cement board. I'm going for the most economical and 2" x 4" is good enough for my grid of 16' x 16'. If you observe the swiftlets nesting, they made their nests at the top and 4" is good enough for the swiftlets to nest. If you look at some of the Indonesian books you can see 4" planks being used and they are successful in having swiftlets making their nest on them. 6" would be better if you can afford it but why should we waste if we can safe. I also have a contingency plan. Should the floor looks unstable, I will topped up with 2" thick concrete reinforced with wire mesh. I will be doing this for the roof where I will have a pool all round with 8" of water. I will waterproof this roof by adding waterproof additives plus a layer of waterproof membrane (double protection). I believed if the flat roof is properly done and if it is filled with water, there won't be leakage. This is because the water in the pool will absorb the heat during daytime and minimise on expansion of the concrete. When there is little expansion, the chances of the concrete cracking causing leakage will be less. It is best to leave to the specialist to do the waterproofing. Besides there are warranties. Ask around and you will find one. Otherwise you can contact me and I am able to help you locate one.
